you only pay for configurability of MUI apps. you can use (if you so

I have OS3.5 installed on my A1200 '040 25Mhz and I am using a
Powerflyer (with FastATA software).  The set up is such that I have an
old
810Mb hard drive (unit 0) to boot from and then a 10.2Gb hard drive on
unit 2.
The problem was that, for no reason at all, the partition ( first WDH0:)
would disappear and then say it was 'uninitialised'.  This then
followed
by the loss of the other partitions.  This resulted in a complete
format.
However, this happened even if I was not writing (or using) the drive,
totally random!

I have (so far) had no problems at the moment since the reformat, but I
have had to change the configuration.  I believe that the FastATA
software
conflicts with OS3.5 and that the option 'no split' causes problems.  I
have changed this so that the logical drives (4Gb units) are separated
(split).
This is not ideal but hasn't caused any problems so far.

Is anyone else having the same problems or have you worked around this.
If I wanted to salvage lost data what program would you use for
partitions
of nearly 4.3Gb?  Also, what 'hard disk optimiser' would you use to
defrag
the partitions.  'Optimizer' runs out of memory when I use it and
'ReOrg'
doesn't support partitions this size.

Any suggestions.

Sometime this year I'll upgrade to an A4000 with OS3.5, but until then I'm
stuck with my A1200 with 3.0. I've been using the latest version of Blitz
Basic (will there be an updated version at some stage?) since summer, and I
need to know if my programs (that work fine with 3.0) will work properly
with OS3.5, or are there some compatibility issues?

I understand what you mean - I feel the same way too! PC's have all this
power because they NEED to - just to run Win978 + DirectX at a
reasonable speed! Sad...very sad...and yet people think this *IS*
computing! I work in a PC shop...building, upgrading, fixing the things.
I love seeing what a mess these things are...and NOTHING beats the
feeling of going home to work/play on my Amiga (well, it terms of
computing, anyway!! ;-))

I was toying with that idea...but worked out the cost! :-|
(and the number of gfx cards available for purchase would be too low)

but dont worry...apart from CDROM drives there will be further support
to all Amiga people (in various other, less obvious, ways)

Exactly like my 4.5Gb UWSCSI drive,first Workbench(HD0),then Work(HD1) and
one other
partition.But 3 other partitions were normal and worked perfectly.If this is
the same
faulty (possibly caused by the NSDPatch?) *_DO NOT RE-FORMAT THE PARTITION*_
the data is
still there,the Amiga protects its hard drives quite well.

It took 2 months to happen by my hard drive.Like you i had a small Boot
Drive(Thank God)
all i did was check the NSDPatch.cfg file in DEVS: and un-hash my controller
and

Until the new Kickstart Roms come out with the next OS release(Please,Please
Bill &
Fleecy)i will not use the extra 500Mb on my drive and therefore i stay under
the 4Gb
barrier.I cannot use it all anyway(Im using a Amiga not a Mb hungry PeeCee.)
So i can use DiskSalv 3 or Quarter Back Tools to recover any damaged
partitions.

What I do (lazy git that I am) is mount the partition with "Mounter" in OS3.5
(or scsimounter if you haven't got 3.5!) and then look at the partition with
"Disk Structure" from the Upper Disk Tools package. You can save a mountlist
from this. I got the package from an old CU coverdisk, but its probably been on
CDs since, or try Aminet.

Yes, that was exactly what I first did: I set FRAMEBORDER="0", ditto for
margins. Voyager, AWeb and IE still displayed a small (2 pixel) border
between the frames (IBrowse did not). When I put in FRAMESPACING="0"
the spaces disappear in V and AWeb (I have yet to test on IE). Ill try
fiddling around with CSS (doesnt work on Amiga - doh!) and use the
framespacing in the meantime as it seems to work on all major browsers.

I was also pleased to notice IFRAME has been made official. About
time...

IF your page is meant to be viewed also by people surfing using either
Explorer; god forbid, or Netscape, then those browsers may layout images
in frames different...

I've found Voyager NGxx to be the browser displaying frames most
correctly...

I've noticed that if you set both frame and frame background image to
have the
same width or height, then Netscape, Explorer, Ibrowse and AWEB figure
that
something is wrong and show the background of the frame as being larger
than the images in the frame....

I've struggled with this on My Amiga site...but found no solution....
well..one....don't use a background, but that is hard to make smooth
passes
of the graphics...

A couple of weeks ago I asked about doing quick sums in a shell, and
Neil Bothwick came up with a way of doing it in ARexx.

Well I've just been fiddling and come up with a script to do it
without remembering the `rx' `say' and speechmarks.

If you stick that in C: as a script and called it something like
"calc" then when you want to do a calculation you could just type:

One note: It works in the DAL way, so
calc 10+4/2 = 12
whereas
calc (10+4)/2 = 7

Amiga scene, though :)

The fact is that a new version of the classic Amiga OS was only just
released at the end of last year. The fact is that companies *still*
produce top notch software for the Amiga (ie. GoldED 6, Pagestream 4,
MiamiDX, Tornado3D, ImageFX 4, Voyager, YAM, etc) even though they
barely sell enough to stay afloat. The fact is that new hardware is
released regularly, with the promise of G3 and G4 cards on the
horizon. The fact is that games are being released to finally take
advantage of this hardware. The fact is that you don't know the future
any better than the rest of us do.

I know that, but there is also a *huge* PC games market out there. And
people who get Windows PCs as an easy way onto the net are deluding
themselves (or allowing themselves to be deluded). It is far easier to
get online using an Amiga and a copy of Netconnect3 or Miami, than it
is using Windows. And I'm speaking from experience here, not out of
prejudice :)

But you're left with a nicer system, imho. I would rather use my 030
AGA Amiga than the latest Windows PC for most tasks. Besides, who
needs the latest, fastest Voodoo card unless you're heavily into 3D
games, which you claim you're not.

No I didn't buy that, and I don't think that was the reason why it
came out either. Its purpose was to give people with both machines an

Thanks (and to James Luscombe too :) That was the problem, I suppose I
should have thought about that before, I just didn't expect the OS3.5
installation to actually require parts of OS3.5 to be already installed
;)

So now I have OS3.5 in all it's glory, all I need now are 3.5
compatible replacements for PowerWB, Arq and AmiBoing. Oh, and is it
possible to turn off the background on the icon text, like I could
with NewIcons?

WE all know that the GREATEST problem with CPU construction
is the HEAT that a CPU develops....

The colder it runs, the faster it goes....

About all these argumentations what processor is the fastest....
Well...I recently read about this new 2GHZ CPU by AMD and the tower
had not only nearly a dozen FANs but even a COLD AIR generator that
generated
cold air, and trough a direct tube sent this air directly ontop of the
CPU...
The CPU ran steadily at 25 degrees celsius using the cold air....
Without it, it would not work..since it'd get to hot...
Mind, the cold air was at about 2 degrees celsius flowing towards the
cpu...

Imagine!...
I doubt we will see neither 1-2 GHZ portable computers neither with
Intel
nor AMD technology before we get bio-cpu's....
IT's all a matter of heat...

The Japs have allready made BIO-CPU's that works.....for a very short
while but they are fast....and far ahead in time....

Ain't technology wonderfull?...:D

When it comes to speed, then I most agree that a 450 mhz G4 might in
some
occations be faster than an P3 900 since the PPC processors have a much
better dezign and compes with a lot of info better...

An native OS like Amiga OS would be a lot faster on a G4 450 than an OS
like WindowsXXxx on a P3 900...

...I imagine..

I forgot to mention that it was reading the mp3's off a CD at the same
time.  After putting the ppc mpega.lib in libs: it works fine ...

Make sure the Icons attributes are RWED, and don't move the
application around your partition. If you re-org your drive, or move
the MakeCD program anywhere else it will lose the registration info,
and you'll have to reenter it.

Apart from that I don't know what could be wrong.

I don't think you will find it in there, IIRC, it's an IE specific tag
and not a `standard' W3C HTML4 Frameset tag.

Fiddling with FRAMEBORDER won't make any difference. Although
FRAMEBORDER="0" turns the borders/frames off, FRAMESPACING controls the
gap between the frame's pages, IYSWIM. In some cases, you have no choice
but to use FS, I believe Jani has the same problem I encountered when
doing my homepage (http://www.wharne.u-net.com).

Most validators seem to allow FRAMESPACING, so as long as it's used
properly, it should still be `legal'.

I\'ve been thinking. Strange, I know, but there you are.
Remember Fleecy Moss\'s Digital Integration feature in
AF a good while ago? There are two operating systems
capable of providing the sort of functionality needed
for DI; Tao\'s Elate and QNX. Of the two, Elate seems to
be the best, but QNX has its advantages, like the built-
in webserver. Think about it; you could control your
toaster from your bedroom via a HTML interface!
Combined with intent, the Tao JVM, and Jini Amiga could
be the architects of the second digital revolution. I\'d
say that within two years, the first houses to be
completely DI\'ed will be built. Perhaps I just need
more coffee, though.

And probably processors too. The games drive the technology, which was
my original point, that a major cause of the Amiga's downfall was
developers who always wrote games for the lowest common denominator,
ie the basic A500.

I think you misunderstood here, what he meant was the developers
ignored the fact that the Amiga was still capable (of running games
like CM2). CM2 was released, but was heavily cut down, and didn't take
advantage of things which were commonplace in the Amiga at the time,
such as hard drives and accelerators. That had nothing to do with
games consoles having a large share of the market.

Those weren't con tricks. All those times new Amigas were announced,
those were genuinely the plans. It's just unfortunate (in some cases)
that those plans never panned out.

AFAIK Jim Collas was dedicated to making his idea of the new Amigas

That's rubbish! Of course A500s outsold A1200s, and yes, they're now
all lying unused under beds or wherever. But to most people they're
just old useless computers that had great games, but that they
wouldn't be bothered to get running again when they can emulate them
using UAE. And even if they did get them running again, what would be
the point? Most people would just be doing it for nostalgia. People
into the Amiga scene for nostalgia reasons might as well have already
left, because they're not going to be interested in the future.

I have a problem.  Well I have have several, but this one is computer related,
so I wonder if anyone can offer any advise. :-)

I purchased an Eyetech PortJnr serial interface from Active Technologies, and
I've never been able to get it to work with my rev 1B A1200 with Blizzard
A1230/50.

Originally, I had an IOBlix serial card which did work, albeit very slowly.
Much slower than the internal serial port.  So I exchanged it for this PortJnr
card.  Unfortunately, this hardly works at all.

I can connect to the internet at a decent connection speed (about 49333bps), but
when connected, any requests for web pages, or e-mail download requests, go
unanswered until it times out.  As I said before, the internal serial port works
just fine.

I've tried different ISPs, removing WB patches and any unnecessary hardware,
fiddling with the TCP/IP settings on Genesis, and trying another A1200 (also a
rev 1B), with no luck.

I suspect that the old revision 1B board is the problem.  However, I've heard of
1D4 & 2B boards having problems, but not the 1B.  Does anyone know any
different?  Is anyone else using any clockport serial cards with a A1200 rev 1B?

Any help or advise appriciated.

PS - I've also sent this to AF Workbench.

Yes, I do, but they'd be no point marketing that in an emulation-stylee as
it's availble for practically every platform under the sun anyway. As for
*new* games not being different, this is a malaise that *all* gaming
platforms suffer from right now. It's down to deadlines, shipping dates,
marketing and greed. Having said that, some companies do still make games
that stand out... but anyway, games aren't your thing...

I think games consoles never let go of the market. To play games it will
always be easier to do it with a dedicated machine then to do it with a
jack-of-all-trades computer (until a new Amiga *does* come out, of course :)

So you're not bothered about what OS you use, or anything? If it meant still
being able to use your 500 would you run Windows 98 on it? Then again, I
suppose it depends on what you end up doing with the hardware...

Yeah, but they didn't, did they? Sell anything, I mean. All they did was
stop people upgrading their current machines for a period, which you're not
into doing anyway. Personally, I think Collas was dumped on just as much as
anyone else.

Besides, you're suggesting that Gateway and all the others kept announcing
new Amigas just so they could let us down again, you make it sound like a
personal vendetta. Truth is to a big company like Gateway you (and me) are
incredibly insignificant. Even if the idea was just to have a laugh at our
expense, it would be costly and pointless.

Well we all know why nobody has any BlizzardVisions, and Weird Science have
told me that they keep asking (Makers of CrossDos 7) for more stock because
they have a number of orders but haven`t had any sort of response yet (I
believe this is the case, maybe someone can shed a bit of light on this - I
understand it's very difficult to get hold of)

It's certainly illegal to keep money for goods not received, but then some
of us don't consider our orders to be that... yet.

These companies probably enjoy bigger profit margins and can afford to
employ more staff in order to answer more queries. But I for one haven't
experienced any problems with any Amiga company thusfar and the technical
support has been very helpful.

Well someone else does the Workbench page now, or was your letter after the
change? And it's not AFs fault that not every single piece of news comes
off. The just tell it like they know it is. Sometimes it turns out it isn't
how they know it is. No one likes being let down, and I can understand the
pissed-off feelings of many Amiga owners, but I don't think anyone in direct
contact with the users has ever deliberately misled them.

That's what I thought you meant, but like I say I only think the current
hardware is dead *not* the concept and I think that the POP option is the
best chance yet of a new machine. As you say: the *Classic* Amiga is dead.

But it depends on whether you're going to use them as computers or as
hardware controllers for something else entirely. As computers for everyday
use go the 500 doesn't hold a candle to the 1200, which in turn is puny
compared to the 4000. And it is this home computing use that most people
would be interested in, I'll wager, whether it's word processing, accounts
or connecting to the net.

Only occasional news items about a new dawn, not constant :) There *are*
things happening that are concrete and tangible. Maybe you should give it a

You dont have to clear all your drive,that was mereley an example of what I
did.You can just install 3.1 over the top and then 3.5 over the top of
that.Each install will write over the last so you will end up with 3.5 and
not all three.Bear in mind that this will rewrite your Workbench partition
so move any files etc. you want to keep to "Work" or whatever.

I would say the major factor is that is was managed badly and wasn't
developed for properly. People should stop blaming users, no matter what

faced, but they managed their company better and are still around, even

The problem with saddle stitching is bulking as one section drops on top of
the other as opposed to Perfect Binding where the section lay side by side,
so, depending on the bulk of the stock (AF is fairly bulky) and the number of
sections, it can become a problem. Assuming that you keep live matter away
from the fore-edge trim by 7mm you shouldn't have a problem with that until
you reach the point you'd be selling so many ads it'd be silly not to revert
to Perfect Bound.

IIRC, FUSION has the option of creating a Mount-file for you.  I think it is
under the DEVICES config window.

First auto-mount the partition from HDToolBox, Run FUSION and go to the
DEVICES window. Select the partition and there should be a
'Create Mount-List' button. Click that and a file should be placed in
'sys:storage'. Then you can deselect 'Auto-Mount' from HDToolBox and reboot.

Then when you want to run FUSION, you can double-click the Icon in storage
to mount the drive.

TBH, I don't really see the point in FRAMESPACING at all. Why or when
would having blank spaces/voids in between the the documents on frames
be wanted[1]? Or at least, maybe it ought to be set to "0" as default in

No its not. Its caused by the amiga outputting different images on the scan
lines, and the fact that the refresh rate is so slow that the image appears
to jump up and down 1 line 50 times a second (or 60 in ntsc which is why
its not as bad)

How wuold you like it to be out with your mates (and also having a gay

Hired Guns is just amazing.  It`s difficult to believe it was written so
long ago and for such a base system.  What`s more, 1 - 4 people can play
at once, on one machine, with no detriment to the game.  This is the
quality that all games should aim for.

I`m curious as to why you don`t rate Napalm up there too.  Especially
since you like History Line.

The surveys have arrived thanks - I think ;-)

There is actually rather more of them than you thought, 800 - 900 would
be a much closer estimate and may still be conservative. It doesn`t
include the handfull of Internet Advisor questionnaires I`ve found
either!

I also found an email quoting you for compiling.  Bloomin `eck how much?
No wonder you didn`t go ahead with it.  /me feeling a little silly doing
it for nothing.

I think that you'll find that the price from EyeTech includes VAT which isn't
added to the price quoted from Germany. Also the German price won't include
shipping charges, and although they will be a little lower for Eye Tech, they
have to be absorbed somewhere. Oh, and the staff at Eye Tech who do all the
buying and selling do like to eat occasionally......
